Just before Christmas, and six weeks overdue, the government published its targets for air pollution in the Environment Act.
The government has chosen to ignore health experts at the World Health Organisation (WHO) and has set a target of 10 micrograms per m3 for particulate matter, twice as high as the WHO recommends, and stated that this weaker target does not need to be reached for another 17 years - not until 2040!
90% of the almost 50000 respondents to the air pollution section of the consultation disagreed with the proposed level of ambition for the air quality targets.
The target is so weak that it is clear our leaders are still not taking any responsibility for protecting today’s children while their lungs are vulnerable and growing.
